Introduction

Japan is like no place on earth. Of course, this applies to many different countries on the planet. However, there’s this certain charm Japan possesses which makes it so appealing and intriguing like no other.  Perhaps it’s the rich history behind the country and its captivating temples. Or maybe it’s the stunning landscapes across the country. Could also very well be the great people and exquisite cuisine.  What if all of the above is true, and some? Well, If these characteristics interest you, then, Japan may very well be for you.

In the course of this article, I will discuss topics such as Where to Visit, The Cuisine, language barrier and more (see table of contents below). Hopefully, this will give you an idea whether or not Japan is for you. And if it is, it could also narrow down as to what, where and when you should visit based on your interests.

Why Japan is Worth Visiting

Japan is such a unique country with so much to offer. From Kyushu to Hokkaido the uniqueness and beauty shines through in all parts. That being said, it comes to no surprise they received over 24 million tourists in 2023 and would’ve most likely exceeded that number drastically in 2024 if not for the Noto earthquake.

This however shouldn’t refrain you from visiting. Because in relation to the 24 million visitors received in 2023 that i have previously mentioned, Japan made over 35 billion dollars in spending by tourists. Thus, if anything, this should be all the more reason for people to visit. Our contribution to the country will greatly help the victims of the Noto earthquake.

On a brighter note, the country will always remain alluring, and those able to visit should go at least once in their life. The experience could be world changing and inspire you in many different ways. The question is ; Where to visit? Let’s dive into it!

Where to Visit

For this section, I will be dividing three different vacation styles based on interests. For convenience purposes, a 3 circle venn diagram which includes the places that match your vacation style the most will be added at the end of this section.

The 3 vacation styles are:

Nightlife

Nightlife is not strictly for night time but more for those interested in vibrant atmospheres where they can meet people, see innovative technology, visit world famous markets and go out at night. In summary, this section is for those who don’t mind the busyness.

Tranquility

Tranquillity is for the travellers who like to take things easier and truly appreciate their surroundings. Enjoying what the country has to offer in terms of nature, fine cuisine and architecture. In summary, this section is for those who enjoy the calmness.

Explorer

Explorer is for people ready to embrace the country’s culture. Eager to visit landmarks, learn about the history and eat traditional dishes. In summary, this section is for those prepared to live like a Japanese native for the duration of their trip.

Nightlife:

Tokyo

I know this comes to no surprise, as a matter of fact, I'm sure you were expecting it. Tokyo is absolutely the go-to location for a vibrant atmosphere. Being the most populated city in the world with around 36 million people in the metropolitan area, it’s certain you will meet like-minded travellers and very inviting locals.

With countless nightlife activities, cool stores and fascinating technology you will find at the Miraikan future museum, I can guarantee you won’t have a dull moment in Tokyo. Especially if traversing the Shibuya Crossing. Also, if you happen to be a Disney fan, there’s even a Tokyo Disneyland!

Osaka

Osaka is 309 miles South-West of Tokyo. Being the third largest city in Japan, Osaka is nonetheless just as impressive as the latter. Being home of the Dotonbori district, you can expect impressive neon-lights shining on all sides with some of Japan’s best clubs and bars. You can even partake in The Osaka Pub Crawl if that tickles your fancy.

There is also the Kuromon Ichiba Market worth checking out. It measures around 600 metres in length, where you can expect all kinds of goodies. Especially Fish such as Pike or Fugu depending on the time of year you go.

Tranquility

Matsumoto

Matsumoto is a great location for those looking to unwind and venture out to experience Japan’s natural beauty. Matsumoto is in Central Honshu, where you can find yourself staring at the breathtaking view of some of Japan’ highest mountains, which you can also hike! You can also expect to see one of the twelve original castles remaining in Japan, the Matsumoto-jō castle. Despite being the oldest, it certainly does have a charm to it.

If you’re planning on having a relaxing visit, I'd avoid visiting during the last weekend of July, since this is when the Matsumoto-jo Taiko Matsuri festival happens every year.

Naoshima

Naoshima is a stunning island measuring around 3 square miles, located in between Okayama and Kagawa. Also called the Art Island because of its numerous art museums, you will find beautiful beaches with crystal clear water as well as palm trees. In order to get to Naoshima, you must get on a ferry from the Honmura Port or the Miyanoura Port.

The Art Island has a lot to offer despite its size, such as affordable accommodations as well as great cafe’s and restaurants which close a little early. You are free to roam the island till 11:00PM. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in Japanese culture and enjoy the stunning beaches, Naoshima is the place for you.

Kyoto

Kyoto is one of the most diverse cities in Japan. From the many amazing temples to great cuisine to awe inspiring landscapes. Whether you want the busyness of the big city, the calmness of the country or richness in history, Kyoto has it all covered.

Many enjoy going to this wonderful city in the spring to look at the breathtaking cherry blossoms that bloom from March to May. Others enjoy going in the fall to see the leaves turn to lovely colours like yellow, orange and red. Regardless of the time of year you go, the incredible Kiyomizu-dera temple will be overlooking the district of Southern Higashiyama.

Shikoku is a great location for explorers ready to indulge in adventure. This island is located South-West of Osaka. You can expect beautiful warm weather, along with well over a week’s worth of exploration. The island measures a little over 135 miles and you can find cities like Kochi or Matsuyama, although the real adventure lies in the north western parts of Shikoku like Iya Valley.

Iya Valley is the ideal location for those ready to partake in a stimulating hike, while crossing vine bridges going over the pleasing Iya River flowing in between large green mountains.

Japan is well known for their amazing cuisine such as world famous Kobe beef originated in Kobe, Japan. Once reading the few of many japanese dishes listed below, it’ll come to no surprise why Japan has a total of 414 Michelin stars. This makes them the second country with the most Michelin stars. Here are a few delightful dishes you can expect:

Sukiyaki

Sukiyaki is thin slices of beef complimented with vegetables cooked slowly with sugar, soy sauce and mirin which is rice wine originated in Japan. Once cooked, it is then dipped in raw egg.

Kushikatsu

Kushikatsu is somewhat similar to Tempura, however in this case, it is deep fried meat such as seafood, pork and seafood as well as vegetables like bamboo, onion, eggplant etc… which is then placed on a kushi or in other words, a skewer.  Kushikatsu is popular in Osaka since it is where it originated from.

As previously mentioned, these are only a couple of many delicious meals you may find on your venture. Other honourable mentions are Sushi and Ramen. It is undeniable that you will find tasty Sushi and/or Ramen restaurants, as they are a staple of Japan.

Fun fact:

Did you know, as of pretty recently, many Japanese families started a  tradition of eating KFC on Christmas? That’s right, once a year they indulge in some good old Kentucky Fried chicken.

Language Barrier?

We’ll get right down to the meat and potatoes for this section. Do you need to know Japanese in order to visit Japan? The short answer is: No.

The misconception that you need to learn Japanese in order to do anything there is quite common. Speaking Japanese is undoubtedly very convenient and will make life easier for both parties, however, it is not absolutely essential.

We live in a day and age where we have google translate at our fingertips. Where we can take a picture of the menu which then translates it to your language. Where we can easily translate what we’re saying and vice versa. Japanese folk are very kind, understanding and patient. The important thing is to always be respectful and mindful that there could be some misunderstandings.

This is a no-brainer, but it is certainly helpful to learn a bit of the language a country speaks before visiting. Especially thank you which in this case would be - arigato gozaimasu (thank you very much).

Summary

To conclude this article, there are countless unique and unparalleled experiences one can experience in Japan. On such a beautiful island, there is essentially something for everyone. Whether you fell in the Nightlife, Tranquillity or explorer category, I'm almost certain that your time will not be wasted in Japan.
